Love Story & Homesickness, Framed in Art

About Mai Trung Thứ

Born in 1906 in Hải Phòng, Mai Trung Thứ (also known as Mai Thứ) spent most of his life in France, where his artistic legacy took shape. His silk paintings – depicting women, children, and quiet moments of everyday life, are imbued with a distinctly Eastern sensibility.

Living far from home, a deep longing for Vietnam gently unfolded through every brushstroke.

“Ít có ai tạo được thế giới sống động làm gợi nhớ quê hương Việt Nam thanh bình với bao ký ức của một tuổi thơ hồn nhiên, trong trẻo như Mai Trung Thứ”. - Lê Phổ

About Lily & Antoine

Lily and Antoine, a Vietnamese couple based in France, share this same thread of distance and belonging. Returning to Vietnam for their wedding, they envisioned a celebration that tells not only their personal story, but also one of origin and cultural connection.

Inspired by the quiet homesickness woven into Mai Trung Thứ’s works, “Longing Home” – Hoài Cố Hương unfolds as a cinematic narrative, capturing the emotions of two souls living afar, yet deeply rooted in the culture that brought them together.

The Concept: A Wedding Inspired by Mai Trung Thứ

Color Palette & Mood

Color Palette: A distinctive element in the works of Mai Trung Thứ lies in his use of pure, vivid colors – rich tones of blue, red, yellow, and green that bring his compositions to life. Echoing this artistic language, the design embraces the venue’s existing palette, gently layered with these hues across decoration, activities, and dress code.

Mood: The result is a space that feels like a living canvas – where art becomes atmosphere. Each detail carries a soft, nostalgic, and poetic quality, subtly translating the essence of Mai Trung Thứ’s paintings into a contemporary celebration of love and memory.

Floral & Decoration Styling

The works of Mai Trung Thứ evoke a gently nostalgic atmosphere, shaping the foundation of this fine art wedding.

Material: Silk textures, framed artworks, and neutral backdrops are layered with warm lighting to create a poetic, timeworn ambiance. The space feels like a living canvas, where fine art meets intentional styling. Table details, from name tags to napkins, table linens- subtly echo the color palette of his paintings.

Venue’s chandeliers mix with candles, and table lamps add warmth and depth, enhancing the soft, dreamy mood.

Floral elements: lotus, anthurium, bird of paradise, banana leaves, bamboo, and gladiolus are reinterpreted through a refined, artful approach. Focused on composition over abundance, the overall setting becomes a Mai Trung Thứ–inspired art wedding: poetic, intimate, and deeply rooted in culture.

Invitation

The invitation suite extends the fine art wedding concept, inspired by Mai Trung Thứ. Hand-drawn motifs, elements, and a distinctly Vietnamese color palette bring an artistic, refined character.

Layered elements create a tactile experience – each piece unfolding like a work of art, evoking the feeling of holding a painting in your hands.

A Traditional Vietnamese Wedding - Reimagined

Styling

In Mai Trung Thứ’s work, figures are often portrayed in traditional áo dài, with naturally flowing or softly tied hair and minimal, graceful makeup. This visual language becomes a quiet source of inspiration for the wedding styling.

  • The bride embraces a modernized áo dài in ivory silk or soft pastels for the tea ceremony, while the groom opts for a neutral-toned suit or a traditional áo dài, balancing heritage with contemporary elegance.
  • Hair and makeup remain effortless and refined, enhancing rather than transforming.
  • Guests are also encouraged to wear áo dài, adding to the collective sense of cultural continuity.

Đàn, Ca, Sáo, Nhị

Music becomes a subtle yet meaningful layer. As Mai Trung Thứ was also a musician, and often depicted women playing traditional instruments, the celebration incorporates Vietnamese folk sounds, such as đàn tranh and đàn bầu, sáo nhị during the welcome or reception, creating a poetic, atmospheric presence.

A sensory touch of flavor

A final touch lies in the sensory experience. With guests travelling from France, small culinary gestures introduce them to Vietnam through taste – traditional sweets like ô mai, bánh đậu xanh, and chè lam served upon arrival, offering a gentle, memorable connection to local culture.

A Wedding That Felt Like a Living Artwork

The overall atmosphere is immersive and intimate, gently blurring the line between art and reality. In this space, the wedding is not only witnessed, but felt—like a moment suspended in time, where love, culture, and memory quietly come alive.

Planning Your Own Art-Inspired Wedding in Vietnam

If you’re dreaming of an art-inspired wedding or a fine art wedding in Vietnam, the key lies beyond aesthetics; it begins with a vision & strong concept. A clear creative direction helps translate your story into a cohesive visual language, where every detail feels intentional rather than decorative. From there, thoughtful design execution brings that vision to life – through styling, materials, spatial design, and guest experience.

If you’re seeking a refined and deeply personal celebration, WIS is here to craft your city wedding with intention, artistry, and meaning.

Every wedding begins with a vision and moves forward with a dedicated team ready to bring it to life. You can see us as your planner, your creative partner but also, simply, as a friend.

Because beyond concepts and design, what truly shapes a wedding are the small, personal stories – the kind you’d casually share with friends. The “gossip”, the in-between moments, the little details that matter more than they seem. When you feel comfortable enough to share them, we can truly understand and, from there, walk alongside you to bring that vision to life in a way that feels honest, personal, and entirely yours.
